Leaner and Greener: Delivering Effective Estate Management

"The findings show that managing (public sector) property effectively can reduce the space needed by 30% with potenital savings of £7 billion a year."Matthew Hancock MP, Chair, WSBF inquiry, 'Leaner and Greener: Delivering Effective Estate Management'   The Westminster Sustainable Business Forum (WSBF) launched 'Leaner and Greener: Delivering Effective Estate Management' with the Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in February 2011. The report was Chaired by Matthew Hancock MP, who then sat on the Public Accounts Committee and is now Minister of State for Energy and Minister of State for Business and Enterprise. The report made 15 recommendations to central and local Government on how to create savings though more efficient estate management and identified £7 billion in annual savings that could be made through reducing occupied space by 30%.   Moreover, the report highlighted the strong business case for increasing the sustainability of local government estate with potential savings of £180-200 per m² per year. Local authorities currently spend up to £200 for every tonne of carbon they produce.   The success of the report resulted in further WSBF regional workshops in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol and led to the follow-up report 'Leaner and Greener: Putting Buildings to Work' which looked at how further efficiency savings could be made through the wider public sector working in property partnerships.   Most recently the report was quoted in Eric Pickles, '50 Ways to Save: examples of sensible ways to save in local government' which was published by the Deaprtment for Communities and Local Government as guidance for local councils.   Press Please click on the links below to access some of the press coverage for the campaign.   The Independent   The Guardian   FMWorld
