The Rt Hon Stephen Dorrell was first elected as MP for Loughborough in 1979, which he represented until 1997. In 1997 he was elected MP for Charnwood constituency, which he continued to represent until he stood down in the 2015 election.
He was formerly PPS to Peter Walker as Secretary of State for Energy from 1983 to 1987, Assistant Government Whip from 1987 to 1988, and Government Whip from 1988 to 1990. He then served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, in the Department of Health from 1990 to 1992, Financial Secretary, HM Treasury from 1992 to 1994, before being promoted to Secretary of State for National Heritage from 1994 to 1995, and then Secretary of State for Health from 1995 to 1997.
He was a member of the Shadow Cabinet from 1997 to 1998 as Shadow Secretary of State for Education and Employment. In 2007 Stephen Dorrell was appointed by Rt Hon David Cameron MP as Co-Chair of the Public Service Improvement Group, to look at ways to improve health, social care, education and housing.
Stephen Dorrell was Chair of the Health Committee from June 2010 until May 2014. He was previously Secretary of State for Health, from 1995-97
