The All Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group launches the “Carbon Monoxide Safe 4 Summer” campaign

The All Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG) launches the “Carbon Monoxide Safe 4 Summer” campaign this Thursday, 24th of June to raise awareness of the often unknown risks of carbon monoxide poisoning that arise in the summer months, and inform the public how to stay safe.

Chaired by Mr Barry Sheerman MP the launch event highlights the risks increased risks of carbon monoxide exposure associated with BBQs, wood and coal burners, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and the importance of taking a carbon monoxide alarm on holiday. Drawing on the lived experience of its stakeholders, the APPCOG’s campaign brings parliamentarians together with charitable organisations, public bodies, gas distribution networks, research organisations and the wider industry to share this important message.

Co-Chair of the APPCOG, Barry Sheerman MP says “It is more important than ever to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide this summer. The APPCOG has pushed carbon monoxide safety up the political agenda year on year, and the #Carbon Monoxide Safe4Summer campaign draws on the incredible work of the Group’s members to promote awareness and increase carbon monoxide safety. Please get involved, and share these simple steps to keep loved ones safe this summer.”

Watch AAPCOG Co-Chair Baroness Finlay's podcast for the campaign, explaining why carbon monoxide safety is so important - not just in winter, but over summer as well.

Summer 2021 is unlike any other as people across the UK make the best of what their own back garden has to offer. Brits are investing heavily in garden and outdoor living spaces; campsite bookings have soared by 500%; and first time users are renting caravans and boats as their usual foreign holidays are off the cards.  Across the UK, there has been an increase in entrepreneurial vendors renting out fields or properties for the first time, as many prepare to enjoy their summer holidays in the UK.

Whether you are a holiday maker or property vendor, it’s important to be aware of the risk that carbon monoxide poses at UK stays, BBQ’s and COVID safe gatherings. Carbon monoxide is an odourless and tasteless gas that’s invisible to the eye. It has no easily identifiable characteristics and poses life threatening damage - from something as simple as bringing a disposable BBQ indoors.

On the 24th of June, The All Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group will outline how you can get involved with “Carbon Monoxide Safe 4 Summer” campaign to protect yourself, your family and your community from exposure to carbon monoxide. The launch will focus on the safe use of outdoor heating and cooking equipment, and getting the most out of your carbon monoxide alarm. We can easily protect ourselves and each other from carbon monoxide exposure by acting safely this summer.
