POSTPONED - Plastic Regulation across Europe and the UK

POSTPONED - Plastic Regulation across Europe and the UK

12th March 2019
4-6 pm

This drinks reception will see the All-Party Parliamentary Sustainable Resource Group and the University of Exeter Business School to join forces to discuss how Britain compares with other major European countries in terms of plastics regulation.

In the wake of an unprecedented level of interest in the issue of plastic pollution, and a consequent raise in plastic-related policies around the world, the current situation is that many policies are fragmented and disconnected. Problems of policy coherence risk undermining the effectiveness of existing rules. With this in mind the team at the University of Exeter started working on a comprehensive survey aimed at helping policy learning and informing policy coherence. On top of this, and with Brexit approaching quickly for the UK, concerns remain about the UK losing ground against its EU partners in terms of facilities and policies.

We will kick off with a presentation of the first comprehensive survey of plastics policies and regulation in the European context. A review of existing policies in 15 major European jurisdictions will be followed by interventions by law-makers, business and civil society about the present and future of plastics regulation in Britain and the UK will follow.

Chaired by Lord Robin Teverson, and with speeches from:

  • Anne Main MP, Member of Parliament for St Albans, Chair of the All-Party Group on the Prevention of Plastic Waste.
  • Geraint Davies MP, Member of Parliament for Swansea West, Member of the Environmental Audit Committee.
  • Molly Scott Cato MEP, Member of the European Parliament for the South West of England and Gibraltar.
  • Dr David Monciardini (University of Exeter Business School)
  • Dr David Benson (University of Exeter Politics)
  • Tatiana Lujan, ClientEarth, expert in both EU and British plastics policies.
