Former Vice Chancellor, London South Bank University Professor Sir Deian Hopkin was Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of London South Bank University from 2001 until 2009, and has over 44 years’ experience in higher education. He taught at Aberystwyth University for 24 years where he became Head of History , before being appointed Dean of Human Sciences and later Vice-Provost of London Guildhall University, now London Metropolitan University. In 2010 he conducted an inquiry for the government into the Student Loans Company and was appointed interim Chairman thereafter. He is the President of the National Library of Wales, adviser to the First Minister of Wales on the Centenary of the First World War, serving also as a member of the UK Advisory Board on the Centenary. He is currently a Council member of the University of Essex, the City and Guilds Institute and the Campaign for Learning , and trustee or patron of several charities including Cerebra, Hillcroft College and the Institute for Historical Research. He is a founding member of the Council for the Defence of British Universities and vice-Chairman of the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Times Higher Education.
