WSBF submits to environment watchdog consultation

WSBF submits to environment watchdog consultation

2nd August 2018

The WSBF and colleagues from the APSRG and APPCCG hosted a roundtable to discuss and formulate a joint submission to the Environmental Principles and Governance Bill consultation from DEFRA.

This roundtable, chaired by Policy Connect chairman Barry Sheerman MP was held with members, sponsors and supporters from the sectors of: sustainable construction and infrastructure (Westminster Sustainable Business Forum), resource efficiency and recycling (APSRG), and climate change mitigation and adaptation (APPCCG). Some of the environmental principles that need to be retained after the UK leaves the EU are the polluter-pays principle and the sustainable development principle. The Government is proposing to establish an 'environmental watchdog' to hold the government to account on these environmental principles, filling the gap left by the European Commission and the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The DEFRA consultation on their proposal for post-Brexit environmental principles closes today, and in submitting Policy Connect would like to thank all those organisations who took part and gave their views. There was a divergent range of opinions around the table, but we have done our best to find a consensus position from the feedback we received from academic, industry and NGOs. Cross-party politicians Barry Sheerman MP (Labour), Lord Inglewood (Conservative) and Lord Redesdale (Lib Dem) also wrote to Environment Secretary Michael Gove about the matter.

When the draft Bill is laid by DEFRA, WSBF will be reengaging with our members to get their views.
