Bricks & Water roundtable 1: Running out of water?

9.30 - 11.30am

Following on from the WSBF's Bricks & Water report, this policy roundtable will look at water resources in England, are we going to have enough water to meet future need, and how significant a role there is for water efficiency.

Chair: Luke Pollard MP, Shadow Water and Flooding Minister. This session will look to answer:

  • What role can catchment management play in managing water resources?
  • Are water companies putting too much faith in inter-region transfers?
  • What role does rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse have to play in reducing domestic potable water use?
  • Do the public care about domestic water efficiency when they are buying a house?
  • Should we move as fast as possible to 100% metering coverage, so that people pay for the water that they use?
  • What threats does climate change place on water resources in the future, and what can we do about it?
  • Are we properly taking note of potential drought risk? Could a Chennai/Cape Town situation happen here?
  • Many environmental groups are concerned about river flows – are our water habits putting too much strain on the aquatic environment?
  • What are the devolved administrations doing, and can we learn from each other?
  • How likely is a level 4 drought (standpipes in the street)?
  • Is the 'twin-track approach' working, or do we need more emphasis on one or the other?

Speakers:

  • Prof. Ian Barker, Water Policy International
  • Dr Manuela Di Mauro, National Infrastructure Commission
  • Aaron Burton, Waterwise
