Training the Next Generation of Designers & Engineers

Training the Next Generation of Designers & Engineers

12th October 2017

The All-Party Parliamentary Design and Innovation Group (APDIG) and All-Party Parliamentary Group for Skills and Employment (APGSE) - in collaboration with the Edge Foundation and Design and Technology Association - are delighted to host an exclusive panel event and showcase, demonstrating how design and technology at the secondary level can be used to train the next generation of designers and engineers as part of a new industrial strategy.

This event will bring together an audience of teachers, students and policy makers to discuss the importance of creative subjects and Design and Technology (D&T) to Parliamentarians – with an emphasis on the high tech digital, engineering skills and creative industries that young people have access to.

The panel will be chaired by Michelle Donelan, MP for Chippenham, and invitations have also been extended to:

  • Gordon Marsden: Shadow Minister for Higher Education, Further Education and Skills
  • Andrew Churchill: Managing Director, JJ Churchill Ltd
  • Eileen Budd: Project Manager, Victoria and Albert Institute
  • Sally Benton: Director of Policy & Research, Design Council
  • Bill Williams: Chief Executive of the Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence
  • Alice Barnard: Chief Executive of the Edge Foundation

A high-level panel consisting of senior parliamentarians, educators and design experts will discuss how these skills can be further developed to provide the expertise that is critical to the success of a modern Industrial Strategy.

Additionally, pupils will give a practical demonstration of modern day creative, design and technical skills as part of a drop-in session for Parliamentarians and Parliamentary Staff.
