Technology and Data Ethics Inquiry

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Data Analytics are delighted to be running our first inquiry into the future of technology and data ethics.

The rise in automation, robotics, and the Internet of Things as part of the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution is transforming the way in which people engage with the economy and public services. It is vital that government is able to grasp the ethical concerns that this represents, whilst also being open to the vast potential that new technology and innovation offers.

The inquiry was formed following the Government's establishment of the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation in late-2017.

This cross-party inquiry is co-chaired by Labour MP Darren Jones and Conservative MP Lee Rowley. In addition to broad-based recommendations into how trust can be placed at the heart of emerging technology, the steering group is also focusing on four key policy areas affected by big and open data:

  • autonomous vehicles
  • education
  • policing
  • healthcare

The objective of the report is to set out a vision for how policy makers can positively engage with the challenges and opportunities that big and open data present to body politic.

The call for evidence has now closed. The inquiry steering group is considering matters arising from submissions and four parliamentary roundtables with a view to publishing the final report in April 2019. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks.

We are delighted to be supported in the inquiry by Deloitte and Jisc.
