Response to Department for Education consultation qualifications for early years assistance

The Department for Education held a consultation on qualifications for Eary Years assistants: 'Strengthening level 2 qualifications for the early education and childcare workforce'. The consultation set out proposed criteria for level 2 qualifications in this area and asked for comment.

The consultation comes in the context of the Government's wider Early Years workforce strategy. The latter includes a 'retention and development strategy' that focuses on four key areas including 'Supporting children with SEND'. The consolation itself addressed SEND support directly, with its own dedicated section. However, in the light of the findings from the APPGAT's symposium on Assistive technology in Early Years and Play, we can see that the proposed qualification criterion on 'specialist aids and equipment' should be further underdeveloped. We therefore drew on the findings our event on play to produce a group response to the consultation.

The government is now considering the consultation responses it has received and will publish its own response and statement of intention in this area. The APPGAT will continue to seek opportunities to engage with these issues during this period, and we will produce a public comment when the government publishes its response.
