APPCOG Policy Manager addresses IGEM CO Conference

APPCOG Policy Manager addresses IGEM CO Conference

29th November 2018

On the 20th November, Policy Connect’s Georgina Bailey (Carbon Monoxide Safety Policy Manager) spoke at The Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) 2018 CO conference – ‘Research to Recovery’.

Georgina spoke about three areas to academics, leaders of industry, and members of the carbon monoxide (CO) community:

  1.  What the APPCOG is and what it does;
  2. The current opportunities for improving regulatory protection from CO poisoning; and
  3. New ways to build a policy platform for CO safety.

Specifically, Georgina outlined the APPCOG’s work to reduce deaths and injuries from CO poisoning, as well as its role in advancing the Government’s ongoing CO alarm review. Georgina also called for industry to be more creative when exploring policy areas to influence. This includes working more on areas linked to CO like mental health, fuel poverty, and direct-booking accommodation. Also speaking at the conference were:

  • Dr Robert Dickinson, Senior Lecturer in Anaesthetics (Imperial College London)
  • Julie Connolly, Senior Lecturer (Liverpool John Moores University)
  • Dr Clare Mills, Public Affairs Manager (Headway)
  • Peter Smith, Policy and Research Director (National Energy Action)
  • Prof Carol Holland, Chair in Ageing (Lancaster University)
  • Adrian McConnell, Trust Manager (Gas Safety Trust)
  • Chris Bielby, Chair (Gas Safety Trust)

Themes amongst the speakers included the need to improve our understanding of low-level CO exposure; increase diagnosis speed and accuracy; recognise the voices of CO survivors; and to tackle CO poisoning in a variety of fields from fuel poverty to mental health. A full review of the event will be available in the February edition of IGEM’s journalGas Engineer (Gi).
