Green Finance Taskforce: The role of finance in tackling climate change

5th June 2018
10am - 12pm

Chair: Clive Lewis MP

Keynote speaker: Sir Roger Gifford

In September 2017, the UK Government launched the Green Finance Taskforce. This brought together leaders from the financial sector to make recommendations on accelerating the growth of green finance in the UK. The recommendations were published in March 2018 but were, as the Chair of the Taskforce Sir Roger Gifford wrote in his preface, “the beginning, not the end of this work”.

This panel event will explore the challenge of delivering the green energy investment needed to keep global warming to two degrees or below. Governments cannot do this alone: research shows that private sector capital will be essential to implementing the Paris objectives. While the financial risks and opportunities arising from climate change have gained widespread mainstream attention, they are not yet an integral part of day-to-day decision-making by most financial actors. Panellists from the Green Finance Taskforce will discuss the policy framework we need to shift the capital required and secure a truly sustainable financial system.

The panel will be chaired by Clive Lewis MP, Shadow Minister to the Treasury and ex-Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Members of the Green Finance Taskforce (names TBC) will discuss their areas of expertise and set out next steps, and an audience Q&A will follow.
