Review of Building Schools for the Future programme
715 projects will be cancelled
05 July 2010
On Monday the Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Education, announced that the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme will be discontinued. 715 projects will not receive funding to rebuild or refurbish school buildings. Another 153 projects are still under review. The Department of Education announced that the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, which provided an advice service to the BSF, will be abolished as well. Mr Baker said:”The Building Schools for the Future scheme has been responsible for about one third of all this Department's capital spending, but throughout its life it has been characterised by massive overspends, tragic delays, botched construction projects and needless bureaucracy”. 706 BSF projects will receive funding to rebuild or refurbish schools. Mr. Gove announced that further review on capital investment in schools will be conducted over this Parliament.
