Whatever next - the Conservatives propose energy market intervention

Theresa May and Greg Clark defend energy price cap as "doing what you believe to be right"

The Prime Minister has come under fire for adopting a Labour headline policy from the 2015 General Election, which her predecessor David Cameron had heavily criticised. 

Whilst the proposal to cap rising energy bills is popular with the public, it goes against core conservative principles of allowing free market forces to set prices without Government intervention. Defending the policy, May said that ideology didn't matter, and that doing the right thing was more important.

Former Labour leader Ed Miliband, who was widely attacked for the policy at the time, says that May hasn't answered some of the questions posed to him in 2015, such as failing to guarantee that the cap would mean bills would not rise.
