New plans for schools capital investment announced
The Department for Education has announced new plans to fund schools capital and consult on the findings of the James review.
19 July 2011
The Department for Education has announced the launch of a new schools rebuilding programme, which will priorities those schools in the worst condition. The new scheme also aims to slim down school building regulation in a bid to cut both costs and red tape. The announcement follows the recommendations of the James Review, with government intending to create a suite of standardised drawings and specifications for school buildings. Simultaneously the Department has also announced the launch of a public consultation on the findings of the recent James Review, which will run for twelve weeks and will focus on two key areas, fisrtly “the best model for allocating and prioritising capital, recognising the increasing diversity of the schools estate” and secondly procurement and project management and the need for a more centralised approach to make better use of efficiencies and expertise. Speaking about the new scheme and the James review, Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove MP said “I wish to accept the majority of Mr James’s recommendations, subject to a thorough consultation process over coming months.”
