The Westminster Sustainable Business Forum’s Green Investment Bank Programme:
The Westminster Sustainable Business Forum is running an on going programme of events on the development of the Green Investment Bank. These aim to bring together parliamentarians, policy makers and interested parties from the financial and green investment sector to discuss the development of the Green Investment Bank and contribute to the ongoing dialogue on the formation of the new institution.
Nicky Morgan MP, Chair of the Westminster Sustainable Business Forum's programme of work on the Green Investment Bank, responds to the recent announcements made by the Deputy Prime Minster.
23 May 2011
"Today the deputy prime minister announced the creation of the world's first national bank dedicated to the green economy. The establishment of a Green Investment Bank, to lend to the green energy sector, has long been on the cards, and was one of the key policies included in the coalition agreement, as part of an ambitious commitment to be ‘the greenest government ever'. In March this year, the government demonstrated its commitment by announcing an extra £2bn initial capitalisation from asset sales.
While the revelation that the bank's borrowing powers will be delayed until 2015 may cause some disappointment, I believe that today's announcement proves once again the government's dedication to the creation of a stable financial institution, capable of making long-term investments in this country's green energy sector."

Chair: Nicky Morgan MP
The round table discussion provided an opportunity to discuss what role the bank should take until borrowing is introduced. It also allowed for discussion of the action plan for the next four years that will deliver the Green Investment Bank as a ready to operate, fully functional bank with borrowing facilities, when given a go ahead in 2015-16, subject to government debt.
The Environmental Audit Committee’s recommendations from the recent Green Investment Bank Inquiry were also discussed, inlight of the more recent Government announcements.
