Green heaters for social housing
The Government has launched a new initiative to help install green heaters in social housing.
15 August 2011
The Department for Communities and Local Government has launched a new scheme to promote the instillation of green heaters in social housing. The Government has made £3 million available to registered providers of social housing, which local authorities and social housing providers will be able to submit bids for. Under the new scheme biomass boilers, solar hot water panels and heat pumps will be available. Speaking about the new scheme Philp Sellwood, Chief Executive of the Energy Saving Trust said, “The only way to tackle the energy efficiency of our housing stock is to make it possible for everyone in our society to take action, and low carbon heating systems are a major part of this. The Renewable Heat Premium Payment scheme goes a step further in bringing these technologies to more households.” The deadline for bids is the 15th September, with bidders allowed to bid for up to £175, 000 per housing provider, with hope of financing at least 17 social housing projects. The scheme, managed by the Energy Saving Trust, will assess bids on a number of criteria including value for money, number of heaters installed and learning opportunities. Bidders will find out in October whether or not their bid was successful.
