Jonathan Shaw Policy Connect CEO

Jonathan Shaw

Chief Executive

Jonathan worked as a care assistant, social worker and local councillor before being elected to Parliament for three terms between 1997-2010. During his time as an MP he was a Minister at DEFRA, DWP and Regional Minister for the South East England.

Before joining Policy Connect, Jonathan led a consultancy company that supported a range of organisations across the public, private and voluntary sectors.

He is chair of a mental health charity, Blackthorn Trust.

Claudia Jaksch

Claudia Jaksch

Head of Sustainability & Chief Operating Officer

Claudia is Head of Sustainability and Chief Operating Officer at Policy Connect and directly manages the work of the Westminster Sustainable Business Forum (WSBF).

As Chief Operating Officer, Claudia provides Policy Connect's Chief Executive with strategic and operational oversight of Policy Connect’s administrative, financial and HR capabilities and advises Policy Connect Board Members on key strategic issues.

As Head of the Sustainability department, Claudia oversees all of Policy Connect's sustainability-themed work on energy and climate change, the circular economy and sustainable resources, the built environment, natural capital and infrastructure. 

As Manager of the WSBF, Claudia coordinates the group’s programme of work on promoting effective sustainability policy in the UK and bringing key business leaders and Parliamentarians together around the table to discuss and inform on sustainability policy issues. She is currently managing the impact work from the WSBF's recent research inquiry into domestic energy efficiency

Claudia holds a Masters degree in International Political Economy from King's College London and a Bachelor's degree in European Studies from the University of Passau, Germany. Her past experiences include working for Stakeholder Forum, an international organisation dedicated to advancing sustainable development at a global level, as well as roles at the central bank in Germany and in the private sector in Spain.

In her spare time, Claudia enjoys exploring London's world of museums, art galleries, and restaurants, running, playing squash, reading, and travelling.

Natasha Adade

Events & Operations Manager (maternity leave)

Natasha joined Policy Connect in 2008 as Admin & Events Coordinator and now is Events & Operations Manager, organising the busy events program at Policy Connect. Natasha is the first point of call for events activity from start to finish and, working closely with all the Parliamentary Groups, she makes sure that each of Policy Connect's many events runs smoothly.

In 2010 Natasha successfully managed the Learning to Lead events program which brought together many schools from all over the country who to take part in a day’s seminar, including various workshops, at Central Hall Westminster.

Natasha has a background in Television production with previous roles held at UEFA Champions League and the BBC and BBC World service. 

Natasha Graduated from the University of Westminster and gained a BA in Contemporary Media Practices and is also a member of the Alumni from the Brit School. In her spare time she enjoys reading, putting together dinner parties, and organising various Ghanaian charity Gala Events both in the UK and Ghana.

Natasha is now on maternity leave until April 2017.

Louise Young

Marketing & Communications Manager

Louise joined Policy Connect in July 2015. She supports all communications and marketing activity for all of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups, forums and commissions in the Policy Connect network. She oversees the development of brand, inquiries and reports, website and social media and of course press coverage among other things.

Louise has a BA Hons in English from the University of Leicester and has also studied with the Chartered Institute of Marketing. She is a specialist in renewables and sustainability, having worked in solar, heat pumps, wind and primarily biomass heating marketing before joining the Policy Connect team. 

Her hobbies include cooking and baking, exercising, youth politics and eco living.

Elly Lock

Elly Lock

Manager, APPCCG; and Business Development

Elly is Policy Connect’s business development manager, and also manages the All Party Parliamentary Climate Change group. 

She joins Policy Connect on secondment from the Civil Service Fast Stream. She has previously worked at the Cabinet Office in the Economic and Domestic Secretariat, at the Department for Communities and Local Government in the Cities and Local Growth Unit, and at the Department for International Development on nutrition policy. 

Before joining the civil service she worked in research in the private sector and, previous to that, she lived and worked abroad as an English tutor. She has a degree in French and Russian from University College London, where her research focused on representations of gender in the Russian media.  

Outside of work Elly spends most of her time singing - although primarily with her band, she equally enjoys a good karaoke sesh and impromptu singing on public transport (she’s not sure the other passengers enjoy it as much as she does). She’s also partial to watching and (less frequently) playing rugby, discovering new walks in London, rediscovering the beautiful Jurassic Coast, and cooking veggie food.

Kam Kaur Singh

Kam Kaur Singh

Office Manager

Kam is the Office Manager at Policy Connect and joined the team in June 2016. Her past experience is heavily based in Finance and Banking. 

Kam oversees all office based management of Policy Connect's entire staff base. Kam also provides senior management support and guidance within the Sub-Committee and Board meetings for Policy Connect as well as being the Company Secretary.

Kam is an FCA qualified individual and has a great deal of experience within business as well as running her own company prior to joining our team.

In Kam’s spare time, she enjoys time with her young family and travel.

Ayesha Arif

Marketing & Communications Intern

Ayesha joined Policy Connect in January 2017. She helps to organise communications and marketing activity for all of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups, forums and commissions in the Policy Connect network. She maintains social media and websites, as well as assisting with events coordination.          

Ayesha graduated from the University of Warwick in 2016 with a BA (Hons) in Politics and International Studies.

Outside work, Ayesha plays guitar, sings and enjoys (binge-)watching documentaries - particularly those on crime, nature and politics.

Education & Skills

Simon Kelleher

Head of Education & Skills

Simon joined the Education and Skills team at Policy Connect in June 2013. He is responsible for managing the team's work across the Skills Commission, the Higher Education Commission and the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Skills and Employment (APGSE).

Since starting at Policy Connect, Simon has produced several Skills Commission reports including the 2015 Guide to the Skills System, Still in Tune? Skills and the Changing Structures of Work, and The Move to Improve 1 & 2. He has curated a number of Parliamentary roundtables and seminars, most recently a series on skills and productivity, and is currently leading on the LIFES project looking at the leadership of innovation in further education and skills. 

Prior to joining Policy Connect Simon taught Functional Skills at secondary level in the state sector, and gained research and campaigning experience at the Young Foundation and the British Humanist Association. He holds a BA in History and Politics, and a MA in Social and Political Theory from the University of East Anglia.Outside of work Simon enjoys reading, climbing, kayaking and getting creative.

Aaron Bowater

Aaron Bowater

Senior Researcher

Aaron joined the Education and Skills team in March 2016. He works primarily on Skills research inquiries, but also provides support for the work of the Skills Commission and the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Skills and Employment.

Since starting at Policy Connect, Aaron has led on the FETL (Further Education Trust for Leadership) grant funded “LIFES” inquiry. The inquiry examines how further education/skills providers can be more innovative in the future, with a particular focus on the leadership of innovations in their institutional structures.

Prior to joining Policy Connect, Aaron worked as Policy and Public Relations Officer for the 157 Group of Further Education Colleges. Before this, Aaron spent time working at the International SPY Museum, Washington DC, researching espionage for new exhibits.

Aaron holds a BA (Hons) in Politics and an MA in Political and Legal Theory, both from the University of Warwick.

Outside of work, Aaron is a passionate Charlton Athletic supporter who enjoys gardening, reading and long pub walks. He is also a karaoke enthusiast.

Maria Murray

Researcher

Maria joined Policy Connect in August 2016.  As a researcher in the Education and Skills team, she undertakes research on behalf of the Skills Commission as well as providing support to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Skills and Education (APGSE) and the Higher Education Commission.

Prior to joining Policy Connect, Maria worked in a Conservative Member of Parliament’s Westminster office and in a communications role at a small charity.

Maria graduated in 2015 with a BA in International Politics from King’s College London.

Pooja Kumari

Pooja Kumari

Senior Researcher

Pooja joined Policy Connect in October 2016. She leads on inquiries for the Higher Education Commission and provides support for the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Skills and Employment. 

Prior to joining Policy Connect, Pooja worked as a Policy and Research Analyst at a youth charity leading on the evaluation of its flagship school-based programme. She started her career working as a teacher and has taught history in secondary schools in Birmingham and London. 

Pooja holds a MSc Social Policy (Research) from the London School of Economics, a PGCE from the University of Warwick, and BA (Hons) in History, Government and International Affairs from Durham University. 

Outside of work, Pooja enjoys exercising, socialising, attending public lectures, and exploring new restaurants.

Sara Abuzaid

Manager, Energy Safety

Sara joined Policy Connect in June 2016. As Manager of Energy Safety, Sara coordinates the work of both the Carbon Monoxide All Fuels Action Forum & the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group, which work to discuss ways of tackling carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, to improve government policy on carbon monoxide safety, and to raise public awareness of the threat posed by deadly CO gas.

Health

Judy Abel

Judith Abel

Manager, All-Party Parliamentary Health Group

Judy manages the All-Party Parliamentary Health Group and has worked at in the health field for a number of years, working at the British Medical Association from 2001-2009, including as the BMA’s Public Information Manager. Judy has also edited Wellbeing, the quarterly newsletter of the Anxiety Alliance, for the past five years, as she has a particular interest in health information. At the BMA Judy was an assessor in the annual Patient Information Awards run by the BMA Library.

From 2012-2014 Judy worked as Constituency Office Manager and a Senior Caseworker for the Rt. Hon. Simon Hughes, then MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, specialising in health, housing and social care casework.

Prior to working in the health field, Judy worked in market research and business, including for the Australian Trade Commission, and was also based in Brussels for two and a half years whilst working for the European Environmental Bureau.

Judy has a BSc in Geography from Bristol University and an M.Phil in European Governmental Studies from Edinburgh University.

Katherine Perry

Katherine Perry

Manager, Chronic Pain Policy Coalition

Katherine studied BA Hons Government and European Union Studies at Newcastle University, with a year at the University of Mannheim in Germany studying political science and German language.

She has work experience with the European Parliament in Brussels with Fiona Hall, then an MEP; as a Project Manager at a global translation firm, going on to an engagement and consultancy role at an international development charity where she spearheaded the creation and development of a Goodwill Ambassador Programme. 

She subsequently held a researcher role at a leading London-based public affairs agency working across a broad variety of sectors at UK and EU level. 

Katherine joined the Health team in September 2015 and is currently managing Chronic Pain Policy Coalition whilst supporting the APHG and Energy Safety team. 

When she isn’t at work Katherine enjoys being in the countryside and is a keen walker and gardener. She also enjoys travelling, languages and baking.

Ryan Duncanson

Ryan Duncanson

Researcher & Project Coordinator

Ryan holds a BA (Hons) in History and Politics from the University of Glasgow and an MA in International Relations from the Barcelona Institute of International Studies. Prior to joining Policy Connect, Ryan worked at the University of Edinburgh’s Global Health Academy assisting with research and liaising with members. He also has experience of working as an intern at charity Sue Ryder where worked in research and policy. 

In his spare time Ryan enjoys reading and playing rugby.

JTindale

Jack Tindale

Manager, Design

Jack coordinates the Design Commission within our Manufacturing, Design and Innovation programme, directly managing the All-Party Parliamentary Design and Innovation Group and the Design Commission.  

Jack is originally from Barnsley, South Yorkshire and graduated from LSE with a BSc in Government and History in 2012. 

After a term in which he served as Community and Welfare Officer for the LSE Students' Union, he later worked as a researcher to a member of the House of Lords and as Communications Officer at Transport for London. He joined the Policy Connect team in April 2016. 

Outside Policy Connect, Jack is an amateur writer and graphic designer, having helped to establish an online publishing label specialising in counterfactual history. He also enjoys reading political biographies, Gilbert and Sullivan, and craft beer.

Dr George Dibb

Dr. George Dibb

Head of Manufacturing, Design & Innovation

George is Head of Manufacturing, Design & Innovation at Policy Connect, which encourages the exchange of knowledge and understanding, and promoting open debate, between parliament, public policy-makers, and the UK’s diverse and innovative manufacturing and design communities. As head of the group, George oversees and coordinates the work of the All-Party Parliamentary Manufacturing Group, the Manufacturing Commission, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Design and Innovation, the Design Commission, and the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Data Analytics.

George holds a PhD in Physics and joined Policy Connect in September 2016 after working at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) for three years as a Higher Research Scientist. At NPL George worked on assisting the transfer of next-generation printed electronics from academic laboratory research to industrial manufacture. In addition George holds experience working at a European aerospace manufacture and design corporation. He is particularly interested in the policy required to ensure the feed-through of premier British scientific research into a strong national and international manufacturing and innovation sector.

Outside work, George enjoys cooking, marathon running, pub quizzes, playing the piano and is currently attempting to learn Italian.

Mitya Pearson

Mitya Pearson

Manager, Carbon Connect

Mitya joined Policy Connect in January 2016 and initially worked across Policy Connect's sustainability-themed activities on energy and climate change, the circular economy and sustainable resources, and the built environment and natural capital. Mitya is now the Manager of Carbon Connect, the cross-party policy research forum that seeks to inform and guide a low carbon transformation underpinned by sustainable energy.

Mitya has a BA in Politics from the University of Sheffield and an MA in Politics & Contemporary History from the Institute of Contemporary British History at King’s College London.

His interests outside of work include playing and watching football, reading and walking.

Thomas Evans

Thomas Evans

Researcher & Project Coordinator

Thomas Evans joined Policy Connect in September 2016 as Researcher and Project Co-ordinator for Sustainability, and is responsible for contributing to the research aspects of the work of the All-Party Parliamentary Sustainable Resource Group (APSRG), the Westminster Sustainable Business Forum (WSBF) and Carbon Connect. 

Thomas holds a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, and an MSc in Environmental Technology (Global Environmental Change and Policy) from Imperial College London. His past experiences include working at TRAFFIC International, a conservation NGO combatting the illegal wildlife trade, the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre, and interning in Parliament under an MP.

His interests outside of work include film photography, playing guitar, and tennis.

Helen Lacey

Helen Lacey

Sustainability Fellow

Helen joined Policy Connect in January 2017 as a Sustainability Fellow. She works across the All-Party Parliamentary Groups, Carbon Connect and the Westminster Sustainable Business Forum (WSBF) to help shape the programme of Parliamentary seminars and events, entitled ‘The Brexit Series - A Sustainable Future for Britain’.

Helen holds an MSci degree in Natural Sciences from University College London and is undertaking a PhD at Imperial College London. She has previously worked with a number of organisations, including QinetiQ, Roke Manor Research and the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Outside of work she enjoys travelling and trying new cuisines.
