UKCES publishes 2010 edition of Ambition 2020

The UK Commission for Employment and Skills has published Ambition 2020: World Class Skills and Jobs for the UK: The 2010 Edition.

The report warns that the UK is set to fail to meet its goal of being in the top quartile of OECD countries in skills, jobs and productivity by 2020. The report makes several recommendations including:

  • greater apprenticeship opportunities for adults and young people
  • incentives for employers to create high skilled jobs
  • better IAG through the publication of destination and earnings data
  • devolvement of funding decisions to front line staff
  • increase in co-investment in skills

Chief Executive of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, Chris Humphries CBE, said: "... at the moment, just like the England World Cup team, whilst aspiring to still be in the quarter finals in 2020, our current performance just enables us to scrape in at the bottom of the last 16".
