Survey finds UK workforce values work based training over Higher Education

A survey conducted by YouGov for the National Training Awards (NTAs) has found that the majority of UK workers value job related training.

The survey of 2229 people, found that over 50% felt that job related skills training would be most beneficial in enhancing their job performance, in comparison to only 19% who felt that a Higher Education qualification would be most beneficial. Over half also felt that additional training would help make them more employable during the economic downturn, but despite this 22% felt that training opportunities had declined since the start of the recession.

70% of respondents felt that employer commitment to training helped them to feel valued and encouraged them to work harder. The survey also revealed that less than a third of people feel motivated to perform well by salary.

Simon Bartley, Chief Executive of UK Skills and NTAs said: "It is really interesting to see the importance that UK workers place on job-based training and how it enables them to perform to the best of their abilities. This demonstrates to employers how much the training they offer can improve productivity, performance and ultimately an organisations' bottom line. Past winners of the National Training Awards stand testament to the fact there are plenty of businesses and organisations across the UK already achieving success through investing in training."
