National Skills Forum's Summer Party 2010

The National Skills Forum and Associate Parliamentary Skills Group held their annual summer party in Westminster on Tuesday 6th July 2010.

Speakers included:

John Hayes MP, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning
Chris Humphries CBE, Chief Executive of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills
Gordon Marsden MP, Chair of the Associate Parliamentary Skills Group

Chris Humphries gave a presentation on the findings of the National Strategic Skills Audit 2010. Humphries emphasised the growing skills shortages within associate professional and technician level occupations, as well as the increasing problem of underemployment of skilled workers.

John Hayes commended the work of the Forum in generating unprecedented debate around the skills agenda and reiterated the Coalition Government's commitment to apprenticeships and lifelong learning. The Minister also pledged to build a 'purposeful pride in learning' and to elevate the status of practical learning.

The event was attended by members of the National Skills Forum and Associate Parliamentary Skills Group. Also in attendance were former Secretary of State for Education and Chair of Edge, Lord Baker, former Principal of Lewisham College and Chair of LSIS, Dame Ruth Silver, and Barry Sheerman MP, former Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee for Children, Schools and Families.
