Academy expansion gets thumbs up from schools
2/06/2010
The Department for Education has reported an overwhelmingly positive response from schools to the Government's proposals to expand the Academies programme. Since Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education, wrote to school head teachers last week about the initiative, over 1000 schools have applied for academy status, including 273 primary schools.
These new academies will be outside of local authority control, will have greater say over their finances and curriculum, and will be exempt from routine Ofsted inspection. These plans are part of the Government's wider reforms to diversify the education system: fostering innovation, improving education standards and giving parents and pupils greater choice.
