Part 2 of the Future Gas Series will focus on the production of low carbon gas, examining issues related to the production of sufficient and sustainable low carbon gas, and its bulk storage.

This inquiry will look at what is required to develop the production of low carbon gas and evaluate the options for doing this. It will also investigate investments in low carbon gas production, and policy issues related to carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).

This inquiry is being co-chaired by Dr Alan Whitehead MP, Labour Member of Parliament for Southampton Test, Alistair Carmichael MP, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Orkney and Shetland, and James Heappey MP, Conservative Member of Parliament for Wells.

“I am delighted to be continuing to work with Carbon Connect on the second report in the Future Gas Series. Building on our first report, Next Steps for the Gas Grid, this research inquiry into the challenges and opportunities of producing low carbon gas will play a key role in developing our understanding of the future of UK energy, particularly in terms of low carbon heat and transport. It will also be an ideal forum to bring together key stakeholders and policymakers from across the energy sector to shape thinking about low carbon gas.” Dr Alan Whitehead MP, Labour Member of Parliament for Southampton Test & Shadow Energy and Climate Change Minister

“I am excited to be once again collaborating with Carbon Connect on this inquiry. Our first report showed the way for the future of the gas grid, and this second report will shed light on how we can produce sufficient, sustainable and affordable low carbon gas as part of our efforts to decarbonise the UK energy system and meet our carbon budgets.” James Heappey MP, Conservative Member of Parliament for Wells

“Part Two of the Future Gas Series comes at an important time for UK energy policy. In the wake of the Clean Growth Strategy, there is a clear need to improve our understanding of the role that low carbon gas can play in the UK, such as tackling uncertainties around how the UK might develop domestic production of hydrogen and biogases, and deliver carbon capture, utilisation and storage technologies. I encourage you to join us and Carbon Connect on this project.” Alistair Carmichael MP, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Orkney and Shetland
