APPG for chronic pain launched

Anne Begg MP chaired the first Meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Chronic Pain, officially launching the group and stating that this success has helped in placing the issue of chronic pain firmly on the political agenda. The importance of pain has increased in recent months, with the Chief Medical Officer’s report dedicating an entire chapter to the issue for the first time.

The APPG will ensure the importance of this issue is maintained by providing a forum for patient representatives, parliamentarians and healthcare professionals to debate issues concerning chronic pain and ways in which the current pain management system can be improved.

The All Party Group is in full support of the proposals made by Sir Liam Donaldson in the annual report, with particular emphasis being put on the need for pain management training across all levels of health professionals. 7.8 million People in Britain now live with chronic pain and the numbers are rising, the launch of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Chronic Pain represents a change in attitudes towards this and recognises a need to improve pain services.
