This roundtable will examine in detail potential models of paying for a transition to a decarbonised gas grid.
All plans for decarbonising heat will mean significant changes to the current system and involve costs. Any possible transition from a gas grid which uses natural gas to one which uses biogas or hydrogen will need to be funded. There are a number of ways of managing this but the best model for doing so, in terms of feasibility, cost effectiveness and fairness, is yet to be determined. If a significant portion of the gas grid is maintained to be used for low carbon gas, the plan for paying for this will also need to be coordinated with the deployment of other heat decarbonisation technologies such as heat pumps and district heating.
