Does the UK Need a Heat Revolution?
A Carbon Connect Panel Discussion, 28 February 2012, House of Commons Terrace
Despite accounting for over half of our demand, heating has long been a Cinderella issue pushed to the sides of the UK's energy debate. However, with a need to decarbonise heat and a quarter electricity generation capacity about to reach the end of its life, we are presented with a unique opportunity to consider both future heat and electricity provision.
A new report from the CHPA, Heat Revolution, highlights the need for heat to be at the heart of our energy debate. The document assesses the energy needs of a range of customers - industrial, urban, suburban and rural - exploring how electricity and heat can be decarbonised for each, whilst maintaining competitiveness and security of supply.
Taking its cue from this work, our expert panel will address whether UK energy policy shouldmove towards a 'Heat Revolution', tackling the following key questions.

Taking its cue from this work, our expert panel will address whether UK energy policy shouldmove towards a 'Heat Revolution', tackling the following key questions.
-
Who will benefit from an integrated approach to energy? What role can heat play in alleiviating peaks in electricity demand?
-
What level of government intervention (both local and national) is needed to deliver more integrated energy infrastructure?
-
Which areas and industries are already operating integrated energy solutions? What can we learn from these examples?
-
Can the heat revolution help insulate users against energy price increases?
The event will welcome contributions from several leading sustainable energy practicioners, including Michael Woodhead, Managing Director of E.ON Sustainable Energy and Stephen Marland, Future Projects and Innovations Manager at National Grid.
