Government publishes policy programme

Coalition outlines key objectives across all policy areas

20 May 2010

The new Government has published The Coalition: our programme for government, listing the policies it will seek to implement across all policy-areas during the next Parliament. A number of policies listed across environment, planning, energy, business and taxation are directly or indirectly relevant to sustainable resource management. These include:

  • Working towards a ‘zero waste’ economy

  • Encouraging councils to pay people to recycle

  • Measures to promote a huge increase in energy from waste through anaerobic digestion

  • The implementation of a devolved planning system, as detailed in the Conservative party's Open Source Planning paper

  • The abolition of  the Infrastructure Planning Commission

  • The development of a consolidated national planning framework covering all forms of development and setting out national economic, environmental and social priorities

  • The establishment of a full system of feed-in tariffs in electricity and the maintenance of banded Renewables Obligation Certificates

  • The creation of a green investment bank

  • An increase in the proportion of tax revenue accounted for by environmental taxes
