Government to let councils sell renewable electricity
As recommended in the latest APSRG report
7 July 2010The energy secretary Rt Hon Chris Huhne MP has announced the government will lift the ban on councils selling renewable electrcitiy direct in to the national grid. This was recommended in the APSRG report Waste Management Infrastructure: Incentivising Community Buy-In in February 2010. The report recommended that the government amend the relevant legislation - Section 11 of the Local Government Act 1976.
Speaking at the Local Government Association annual conference, Mr Huhne said; “It’s ridiculous that the 1976 Local Government Act prevents councils from selling electricity from local wind turbines, or from anaerobic digestion. I want to see this repealed and by the end of the year I hope local authorities will be able to sell electricity from renewables – generating revenue to help local services and keep Council Tax down."
