MEPs call for new WEEE Directive

More effective collection and treatment of waste encouraged

28 June 2010

Members of the European Parliament are calling for more effective collection and treatment of waste such as fridges, phones and computers in the European Union. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has reported that MEPs are calling for waste collection targets to be based on the actual amount of waste generated.

The Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety voted in favour of a proposed update to the current legislation on waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE). The proposed update calls for Member States to collect at least 85% of WEEE produced by the country by 2016.

MEPs have also announced plans to carry out tougher inspections on exported waste, in order to avoid situations where untreated waste is illegally exported to developing countries. The plenary vote on the WEEE Directive will take place in September 2010.
