New percentage based WEEE recycling targets rejected
Karl-Heniz Florenz opposes EC proposals
30 August 2011
German MEP Karl-Heinz Florenz, who is responsible for leading the new WEEE Directive through the European Parliament, has rejected proposals made by the European Council. The European Council, including environment ministers such as Caroline Spelman, supported a move to a percentage-based target begginning at 45%, 4 years prior to the recast being agreed, raising to 65% in 6 years. Instead, the report backs the immediate introduction of an 85% collection target form 2015 with the target being calculated as a percentage of total WEEE generated.
