21 November 2011
21 November 2011
The Localism Act this week received Royal Assent after completing its journey through the Houses of Parliament. The legislation provides for wide ranging provisions which intend to shift power away from Whitehall and towards local people. Highlights of the Act with regards to the sustainable reources sector include the repealing of powers from local authorities to charge people for putting their rubbish bins out incorrectly and from charging extra tariffs for taking away household waste. The government will now start to take forward the measures in the Act, many of which are expected to be in place by April 2012.
