Landfill halved since 2001
Reducing use of landfill revealed
6 June 2011
Recent provisional figures show that landfill tonnages have more than halved since 2001. The HM revenue and Customs (HMRC) bulletin on landfill tax for March 2011 shows that levels of waste sent to landfill at the standard rate of tax has fallen to 24,882,000 tonnes in the 2010/2011 finacial year from 50,643,000 tonnes in the 2000/2001 finacial year. The June 2010 Budget detailed changes to the Landfill Tax Escalator which see an increase of £8 per tonne each year from 1 April 2011 until at least 2014 and sets a floor under the standard rate of £80 per tonne to incentivise landfill diversion.
