Community objections to infrastructure development present a significant barrier to the successful delivery of new infrastructure, including waste management facilities. The potential for community-oriented incentive schemes, alongside more innovative and considerate design, implemented through early and throrough engagement with communities, are potential instruments to alleviate local objections. Building on the APSRG report Waste Management Infrastructure: Incentivising Community Buy-In, and against the backdrop of the Government's localism agenda, this series of seminars assesed how community buy-in has developed as a tool for new infrastructure development, what challenges still remain, and how they must be addressed. It addressed the role of community buy-in in other renewable sectors and other countries, as well as considering the role of design and early community engagement to delivering successful and sustainable infrastructure.
