HMRC clarifies changes to Landfill Tax
New guidance published will 'reverse' price increases
6 June 2012
Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a 'Landfill Tax clarification document' after a controversial 'guidance note' changing Landfill Tax regulations sparked protests across the construction, skip-hire and waste managemenr industries. New measures within the original guidance note suggested fines on trommel, or inert material, would be raised 2,640%, immediately and without prior consultation, from £2.50 per tonne to the full £64 per tonne charged for 'active material'. A letter from the Treasury, sent to anti-'skip tax' campaigners last week, has stated that the HMRC clarification will now 'result in waste transfer sites and landfill sites reversing their fee increases'.
