EU publishes strategy for sustainable growth to 2020

European Commission publishes strategy for Europe’s “social market economy for the 21st Century”

15 March 2010

The new strategy document produced by the European Commission focuses on delivering ‘smart, sustainable and inclusive growth’ by 2020, including through measures design to encourage resource efficiency.

The Strategy proposes 7 flagship initiatives, including ‘Resource efficient Europe’ to decouple economic growth from increased resource use, support the shift to a low-carbon economy and increase renewable energy sources. National and international policy levers will be employed to achieve these goals.

The Commission hopes to have the final Strategy approved at the European Council meeting in June, where European and national targets will be approved.
