Environment Agency cracking down on waste crime
New Task Force Formed
12 December 2011
12 December 2011
The Environment Agency has announced a new Task Force which aims to ‘blitz’ illegal waste sites in England and Wales over the next few years. The agency believe that approximately 600 illegal waste sites are currently in operation in England and Wales with over 300 of these in close proximity (within 50 meters) of homes or sensitive environmental areas. The new task force, comprised of former policy detectives and enforcement partners, will gather intelligence to move against waste criminals. The Task Force shall be funded by a £5 million grant from the Environment Agency. Environment Agency Chief Executive, Dr Paul Linster said, ‘Waste crime is a serious offence that poses a risk to human health and can damage the environment. The Environment Agency is working with all enforcement agencies to stamp it out. If you're involved in illegal waste activities, you should be looking over your shoulder and expecting a visit from our enforcement officers.’
