Energy National Policy Statements Approved

Energy from waste facilities included in plans
25 July 2011

Following a House of Commons vote, reforms on how planning applications will be reviewed have been approved. The Energy National Policy Statements (NPS) will be used by the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) to inform planning decisions, including major energy projects over 50 megawatts. The statements, laid before Parliament in June, aim to accelerate the planning process for large-scale renewable energy infrastructure, including energy from waste developments. Energy minister, Charles Hendry MP, emphasised that all decisions on new energy from waste facilities woud take into account the waste hierarchy, meaning that EfW should only be an option after recycling and reuse had been assessed.
