Defra publishes update on AD strategy
'UK AD capacity has doubled in the last year'
9 July 2012
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), has published its 'Anaerobic Digestion Strategy and Action Plan: Annual Review on Progress'. Amongst the headlines from the report is the news that AD capacity in the UK has almost doubled in the last year. The report highlights that there are currently 78 AD facilities functioning in the UK, of which 48 are waste-fed and 29 are farm-fed. 100 more AD plants currently have planning permission. The report concludes that the strategy has been broadly effective, underlining the £10 million Anaerobic Digestion Loan Fund as one of many 'highlights' in the last year for the industry. Nonetheless, 26 out of the original 58 actions in the plan remain incomplete and the foreword to the report notes that 'challenges and barriers' to the dissemination of AD remain.
