Decrease in Municipal Waste Announced for 2009/10
Total municipal waste falls by over 2%
9 August 2010Defra has published the provisional quarterly statistics for municipal waste from the Third Quarter of 2009/10 (October to December). The statistics state that total municipal waste decreased by 0.58m tonnes in the year to the end of December 2009, equivalent to a decrease of 2.1% compared to the last year.
A decrease of 2.2% in household waste was noted, as well as a decrease in the amount of average residual household waste, from 295kg per head between April 2008 and March 2009, to 281kg per head between January and December 2009.
The statistics also signal an increase in the amount of waste being treated in energy-from-waste facilities, with 16% of municipal waste being treated this way. The estimates for the fourth quarter (January to March 2010) will be published in November 2010.
