Bin fines to be scrapped
DEFRA announces new consultation
16 January 2012
16 January 2012
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has outlined new plans to scrap the fines which can currently be imposed upon households deemed guilty of over-filling or misusing their bins. A consultation has been launched to stop councils imposing ‘bin fines’ of up to £1,000 on such households. Commenting on the consultation, Environment Secretary Rt Hon Caroline Spelman MP, noted, ‘We want to see people helping us to boost recycling rates by putting out their rubbish correctly, but bullying them with fines is not the way to do it. This consultation will mean that only those causing real problems for their community will get punished’. The consultation closes on 9th March 2012.
