The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has reported that approximately 180 local authorities have expressed interest in the Govenment's £250million fund for weekly waste collections. Communities Secretary, Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, has said that this represents a 'groundswell' of councils interested in weekly collections. DCLG have said that some of the bids received are proposing to use the funding to improve or increase infrastructure and develop new technologies to boost recycling rates, and that these types of bids will be favoured. The deadline for submitting outline bids to the fund is May 11th of this year.
