All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group

Early Day Motion 511

On 14 July 2010, Barry Sheerman MP, Co Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Gas Safety Group, tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) regarding carbon monoxide poisoning and congratulating the Gas Safe Register on its work since its launch in April 2009.

To date the EDM has attracted over 70 signatures.  the text of which reads as follows:-

That this House welcomes the re-launch of the All Party Parliamentary Gas Safety Group; notes that carbon monoxide poisoning is responsible for around 30 deaths every year and injures many more; further notes that these fatalities andinjuries can be prevented by an annual inspection of gas appliances by a gas safe-registered engineer and the use of an audible carbon monoxide alarm; acknowledges recent reports that 81 per cent. of homes do not have audible carbon monoxide alarms fitted; expresses its concern at the Gas Safe Register survey which found that a third of rented properties do not have a current gas safety certificate; is alarmed that an estimated 250,000 gas appliances in Britain are installed or serviced by illegal fitters each year; congratulates the Gas Safe Register on its work since April 2009; and calls on the Government to renew its efforts to warn the public of the dangers of carbon monoxide leakage.
