Industrial Evolution – Making British Manufacturing Sustainable (pdf).

Jayne Baxter MSP, The Manufacturing Commission and Scottish Enterprise are holding a reception in Holyrood (Scottish Parliament) on 17th March (6:00 - 8:30 pm) on the Manufacturing Commission's latest report: Industrial Evolution as well as the newly published Scottish manufacturing action plan 'A Manufacturing Future for Scotland'.

Our Industrial Evolution was published at the end of October 2015 and focuses on the manufacturing sector and the various obstacles it needs to overcome in the near future to ensure long-term social, economic and ecological sustainability. A strategic focus on non-labour productivity will be required to meet the challenges currently facing British manufacturing, from dwindling natural resources, an innovation deficit and the development of a skills base for long term future.

Whilst manufacturing in the UK is currently facing significant challenges, there are numerous opportunities still to be grasped. It is a crucial sector of the economy, and maintains an important historical and cultural significance for Scotland. The new manufacturing action plan announced at the end of February comprises key measures for industry and Government to ensure that we work together to realise Scotland’s manufacturing potential.

Speakers:

  • Jayne Baxter MSP (Chair) - Member of the Cross-Party Group on Industrial Communities.
  • Professor Jonathan Corney - Co-Director of the Scottish Institute for Remanufacture
  • Nick Shields - Director of the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service, Scottish Enterprise
  • Michael Folkerson - Manager of the Manufacturing Commission and the APMG
  • Ben Peace - Sustainability Lead at the Knowledge Transfer Network

The reception forms part of our work to follow up on our report. We look forward to welcoming members of the industry and policymaking community to discuss the opportunities presented by the Manufacturing Action Plan, and key measures to help improve industrial sustainability.
