'Innovation and the economic downturn'; a roundtable discussion and breakfast with David Willetts & Jonathan Kestenbaum (CEO, Nesta).

December 17th, 08.30-10.00am, Dining Room B, House of Commons

At a recent Nesta (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts seminar, Gordon Brown argued that 'Nothing matters more to the future of our economy than our ability to innovate'.

On the 17th of December, Nesta will be launching their major new report in Parliament. ‘The Networked Recession’ provides a timely look at the effect of the economic downturn on innovation and how innovative responses can lead us out of recession.

The report highlights the role of businesses, the public sector and the regions and draws on lessons from the UK and abroad.

Building on the findings of this key report, Shadow Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, David Willetts and Nesta CEO, Jonathan Kestenbaum, will be discussing the importance of the report’s key findings and asking how innovation can drive us out of this economic downturn.

A presentation from David Willetts will be followed by a roundtable policy discussion focusing on the examples of countries who have harnessed innovation to reverse economic decline.

We'll also be examining the UK’s capacity to develop a national innovation strategy that recognises and builds on our entrepreneurial strengths.
